불교학연구회 창립취지문

새로운 불교연구의 장을 열며
 

불교는 오랜 동안 우리 문화와 사상의 핵심에 자리해 왔습니다. 또한 불교의 세계관과 사고방식 및 삶의 태도는 서구 물질문명이 휩쓸고 있는 오늘의 상황에서 새로운 빛과 가능성으로 재인식되고 있습니다. 이처럼 불교에 대한 학문적인 연구의 필요성은 끊임없이 증대하고 있습니다.

그러나 지금까지의 불교연구는 다분히 개인적 차원에서 이루어짐으로써 그 연구성과가 객관적으로 충분히 검증되지 않은 경우가 많았습니다. 그래서 뛰어난 연구업적이 제대로 평가받지 못한 경우도 있고, 불완전한 연구가 그대로 통용되는 경우도 있었습니다. 상호대화와 비판을 통한 검증을 함으로써 연구성과를 공유할 때에 비로서 튼튼한 연구성과가 축적되고 학문의 발전도 기약할 수 있을 것입니다.

한국종교학회 불교분과는 이러한 문제점을 절감하여 1998년 9월 열린학문마당을 기치로 삼고 실질적인 학문교류를 할 수 있는 토론중심의 학회로 재출발하였고 지금까지 의욕적인 활동을 계속해 왔습니다. 1년에 6회의 월례발표회와 2회의 정기발표회 그리고 년2회 방학을 이용한 1박2일의 워크샾 등 그 동안의 활동은 양적으로도 상당한 것이었고, 모든 모임은 참가자들의 자유롭고 진지한 토론으로 열기가 넘쳤습니다. 불교분과의 왕성한 활동은 불교계에 널리 알려졌고 기존의 학회에 자극을 주었으며, 새로 창립한 학회의 모델이 되기도 했습니다. 불교계 신문에서 우리 모임을 우리나라에서 가장 활발한 활동을 하고 있는 학회로 선정하여 소개하기도 했습니다.

그 동안의 성과를 엮은 학회지『불교학연구』창간호를 간행하면서 이 모임의 활동을 발전적으로 지속해 나가기 위해서는 분과가 아닌 독립된 학회로서의 위상이 필요하다는 결론을 내렸습니다. 독립된 학회로 운영할 때에 보다 자유롭게 다양한 활동을 독자적으로 할 수 있고, 논문집에 실리는 논문도 제대로 평가받을 수 있는 등좋은 점이 있습니다. 이에 불교학 연구회라는 새로운 장을 출범하면서 학회의 기본 방향을 다음과 같이 정리해 봅니다.

첫째, 불교연구를 보편적 학문의 지평에서 수행해 나가고자 합니다. 엄밀한 학문의 방법에 의하여 보편적인 대화가 가능하도록 연구가 이루어질 때 불교학은 현대의 학문 속에서 당당한 위상을 가질 수 있고, 그 연구성과는 보다 많은 사람이 공유할 수 있을 것입니다.

둘째, 열린 태도를 가지고 학문활동을 해 나가고자 합니다. 사람의 벽과 견해의 벽이 가로막고 있는 한 자유롭고 활발한 학문교류가 이루어질 수 없습니다. 학문적 배경·나이·지위에 구애받지 않고 오직 진리에 입각하여 마음껏 얘기하고, 어떠한 견해든지 학문적 논거로 뒷받침되면 기탄없이 말할 수 있는 열린학문마당이 되고자 합니다.

셋째, 다른 연구모임과의 긴밀한 협조를 통해 상호발전을 이룩할 수 있도록 노력할 것입니다. 여러 다양한 연구모임이 독자적인 자기 활동을 계속해 나가면서 우호적으로 협력할 때 학문을 보다 풍성하게 꽃피울 수 있을 것입니다.

지금까지 깊은 관심과 애정을 가지고 적극적으로 참여해 주신 것처럼, 더욱 뜨거운 성원과 열기로 좀 더 알차고 활발한 학회로 이끌어 주시기 바랍니다.

The Statement of Foundation

Opening a New Chapter of Buddhist Studies

Buddhism has been the center of our culture and thoughts for a long time. And now, in the tide of highly developed material civilization, the Buddhist view of the world and way of thinking are being recognized as new light and possibilities. Under this situation, the need for academic research about Buddhism has been increasing continuously.

However, Buddhist study has been conducted on an individual level, so in many cases, the academic results have not been fully appreciated from an objective viewpoint. Sometimes outstanding achievements were ignored, and on the other hand, incomplete research has sometimes gained validity. Only when we share academic results, then through checks and examination by mutual dialogue and criticism can we accumulate academic achievement and further develop our studies.

The Department of Buddhism of the Korean Association for Religious Studies, the forerunner of KSBS, realized this problem. In September 1998, it turned to a new chapter to serve as a debate-centered society. Since then, the Department has exerted itself to provide bimonthly meetings (6 times), general conferences (2 times) and 2 day-1 night workshops (2 times) in a year, which were all filled by a liberal and sincere atmosphere. These activities of the Department have been well known in the Buddhist world. It not only inspired other academic bodies but also became a good model for new-born organizations. Buddhist media once introduced us as the most active organization among all of the others.

Through the publication of Buddhist Studies, we came to the conclusion that we need to move to an independent society from a department of the Korean Association for Religious Studies. An independent organization can perform various activities with more freedom, and scholarly works can be valued with due recognition. As a result, we now launch the Korean Society of Buddhist Studies and set the main principles as the following. 

First, we will study Buddhism from a universal academic aspect. When our research adopts a strict approach to allow comprehensive communication of others, Buddhist studies can claim its due status in the modern academic world, and more people can share the academic accomplishments. 

Second, we will perform academic activities with open minds. The walls of people and of ideas hinder liberal and active exchanges among scholars. Our society will play a role as an open academic plaza to exchange thoughts freely on the basis of truth and academic arguments, beyond academic background, age, or social status. 

Lastly, we will seek mutual development with other research bodies through close collaboration. With the combination of each other's independent activities and, at the same time, friendly cooperation, the academic world will flourish with a variety of achievements. 

We deeply appreciate the sincere interest and affection that our members have shown so far. We believe that more sincerity and support will make a more fruitful and active organization.
